A former professional football player was arrested after allegedly refusing to surrender to authorities and running from deputies on foot, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Thursday.

Joseph Williams, 33, first drew deputies’ attention around 4 p.m. Oct. 28 near La Brea and Fountain avenues for possible speeding, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies pulled Williams over but let him go with a verbal warning. They soon discovered he had an outstanding felony warrant for receiving stolen property, prompting them to stop Williams a second time.

Williams then got out of the car and ran from deputies, the Sheriff’s Department said. Deputies caught up with Williams, a former running back for the San Francisco 49ers, on Formosa Avenue near Romaine Street.

Williams was booked on suspicion of receiving stolen property, resisting or obstructing an officer, vandalism, trespassing and violating the terms of probation or supervised release.

Williams was being held on $50,000 bail as of Thursday.
